Abstract

Key words Teaching English writing SMP Internasional Laboratorium UM. This study was conducted to describe the teaching of writing at SMP Internasional Lab UM Malang . It aims at (1) describing how does the teacher in SMP Internasional Lab UM teach writing (2) describing what techniques of the teaching of writing are implemented at SMP Internasional Lab UM and (3) describing what are the difficulties in the implementation of the techniques of teaching writing. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects were the English teacher and the students at SMP Internasional Laboratorium UM. The main instrument in this study was the researcher who was supported by some instruments observation checklist interview field notes picture and video. Based on the findings it was found that the teacher s activities in teaching English writing includes listen and do brainstorming and modeling. The materials used by the teacher were taken from Cambridge book. It was also discovered that some techniques of teaching writing that were used by the English teacher include (1) choosing interesting topic (2) prewriting (3) revising (4) publishing and (5) giving assesment. However the English teacher never made daily lesson plans. There were some difficulties in implementing the technique of teaching writing at SMP Laboratorium UM . It is composing. Here the students usually have difficulty. They had the idea about what they want to write but they could not make sentences because they lack vocabulary grammar and tenses. This study present some suggestions for the English teachers and future reseachers. English teachers as very important figures in the teaching and learning of English in the classroom are recommended to use the techniques of teaching writing that are interesting fun and relevant to the students level. In addition an English teacher should carefully prepare the teaching preparation and be a good model in the classroom. Also the teacher and the school should improve the capability of teacher in English and the activities of learning English writing at SMP Internasional Laboratorium UM. By doing so students can get better results in learning English. For future reseachers it is suggested that they conduct better study than this thesis. The study about the teaching of English writing is really rare.
