Abstract

Key Words errors descriptive text. Writing is getting more and more essential today. It should be mastered in order to be literate. Writing is a process of telling some ideas down on paper to transform thought into words to sharpen main ideas and to give structure and coherent organization into writing. Although writing is important it is one of the most complicated and complex skills for students to master because students are required to produce letters words and sentences that can be comprehended by an audience. One of the important aspects of writing is the correct usage of grammar. Grammar is one of the language components which influence the transformation of an idea or information. Without a good grammar meanings and ideas might not be delivered properly. And when the students don t understand grammar it always make them making errors. This study is intended to find out students grammatical errors in writing. It was conducted at SMP Lab UM. In line with the purpose of the study the design of the study was descriptive study. The subject of this study was the eighth graders E of SMP Lab UM in the academic year of 2011/2012 which consisted of 33 students. The instrument used to collect the data is the students descriptive compositions on the topic of favorite animal. The errors found in the students compositions are then classified based on the surface strategy taxonomy into errors of omission errors of addition errors of misformation and errors of misordering. In analyzing the data error analysis is used in which there are five steps they are identifying the errors classifying the errors counting the frequency of the errors and the last step is summarizing. Finally the result of the analysis shows that there were four types of errors. They were omission addition misformation and misordering. Omission errors appear as the errors with the highest frequency 46.03%. errors of omission consists of omission of be omission of article omission of third person singular marker(s/es) omission of ing ending and omission of plural marker (s/es). Addition errors make up 23.41% of all errors. They consists of addition of articles addition of be addition of ing and addition of prepositions. Misformation errors come next with the percentage 18.25%. They are misformation of verb and misformation of noun. The type of errors with the lowest frequency is misordering errors 12.31%. It is only misordering noun phrase. Based on the findings some suggestions are proposed to improve the students mastery in English especially in writing skill. The teacher are suggested to give more clear explanation of grammatical rules in English particularly in what tenses which students will use in writing a descriptive text. So that the students will understand more about this kind of text. Furthermore the students are supposed to pay more attention to the grammatical areas where the errors occur. Additionally it is recommended that further researchers conduct similar studies in different context and/or broader scope by using not only students compositions but also other data sources such as questionnaires and interviews for both the teachers and students.
