Abstract

Key words International Standard School Techniques of Teaching English. The decree of minister of education No. 20/2003 states that the government and/or local government should develop at least one school at every education level into a national school which becomes an international standard school. Various methods and strategies have been applied to develop the government program. One of the government strategies to achieve that goal is by establishing International Standard School which implements English as the medium of instruction. It aims at increasing the quality of Indonesian human resources so that Indonesia can compete with other countries. As the realization of the decree nowadays there are many international standard schools for different school level. In international standard primary school English is used as the medium of instruction. This is different from the objective of the teaching English in non international primary school. In teaching English technique of teaching is one of basic components. It is important to investigate the techniques of teaching English in international standard primary school. This study was conducted to describe the techniques of teaching English in the second grade at International Laboratory Primary School State University of Malang (SDLaboratorium Internasional UM). The techniques investigated were the techniques of teaching language skills namely listening writing speaking and reading. This study was a descriptive-qualitative research. The subject was the English teacher of the second grade at the International Laboratory Primary School State University of Malang (SD Laboratorium Internasional UM). The data were obtained from the teacher and the students in the second grade at International Class Program (ICP). The instruments used to collect the data were the researcher observation sheets interview guide and field notes. By employing all of the instruments the relevant data were collected through observation and interview. The data taken from observation and interview were analyzed and presented in the form of description. In the findings show the teacher applied various techniques in teaching skills namely listening speaking reading and writing. To teach listening she applied storytelling listen to the songs question and answer listen and color listen and identify listen and repeat simple dictation and game. For teaching speaking she used simple dialog question and answer listen and repeat and game. In teaching reading she mostly used reading aloud silent reading reading comprehension independent reading. Finally in teaching writing she used question and answer guided writing matching exercises and free writing. Based on the findings it is concluded that most of the techniques used by the English teacher were appropriate for teaching English to the second graders. She applied the techniques by considering the students characteristics. However when teaching using games the teacher needs to simplify the instruction in Indonesian to avoid the students confusion. Furthermore it is necessary for other techniques that more interesting of teaching writing reading listening and speaking.
