Abstract

Keywords teaching English at Elementary School The introduction of English in primary schools has taken place in the attempt to accelerate the improvement of human resources. Based on that phenomenon SDN Sumbersari II Malang has started the teaching of English from the first grade. This study is aimed at describing the teaching and learning process in the fifth grade of SDN Sumbersari II Malang. The purpose of this study is to describe the teaching of English in SDN Sumbersari II Malang in terms of the availability of English syllabus the teaching technique applied the instructional material and the media chosen. The subject of this study are the English teacher and the students of the fifth grade. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The instruments used in this study are observation checklist field notes and interview. The result of this study showed that the teaching of English at SDN Sumbersari II Malang was done by applying well-planned syllabus. The teacher did not always use the syllabus rigidly sometimes she changed or added the activities because what had been planned in the syllabus sometimes did not always run well in the classroom as stated in the syllabus. The teaching techniques applied at SDN Surmbersi II Malang which based on the observation namely listening listen and repeat listen and write draw speaking dialogue and asking answering among the students reading read aloud in turns writing rewrite simple sentences. The teaching material which was hotel was good since it contained various activities simple instructions various topics that suit to the students level interest and needs. She delivered the material by using LCD. There were six different kinds of media available at SDN Sumbersari II Malang namely flash card realia big book chalkboard LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) puppet. Their conditions were good and can be used whenever the teacher needs them. The teacher did not use all the media because not all media appropriate to the goals of learning the materials the students interest and level of difficulty. Based on the research findings there were some suggestions given to the principel English teacher and other researcher. The principal should concern more to the facilitate teachers with training that can broaden their knowledge particularly in teaching techniques. The English teacher should pay attention to all students although it is difficult. She may learn more about how to manage the class. To other researcher the writer suggests other researchers to continue this study by conducting a study not only in the fifth grade. Other researchers also can conduct a study on certain technique of teaching of English in this school.
