Abstract

This study investigated the learning style preferences of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Malang that have good achievement and average achievement. The students learning style preferences to be measured were visual auditory kinesthetic tactile group and individual. The design of this study was principally descriptive quantitative. This study only used two variables students learning styles and English achievement.This study involved only one class having good achievement students and one class having average achievement students. The good achievement class consisted of 37 students and the average achievement class had 35 students. Therefore there were 72 students as the subjects of this study. The instrument used in this study was questionnaire. The questionnaire used in order to get the information about the students learning style preferences was Perceptual Learning Styles Questionnaire designed by Joy M Reid consisting of 30 items that the students had to rate on a five-point scale from 4 to 0. To accommodate the students response and to avoid the students misinterpretation the writer used Sari s translation version of the questionnaires with some modifications to suit to the students level. The results of data analysis showed that the second grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Malang either the second grade students having good achievement or the second grade students having average achievement preferred to have group and kinesthetic as their major learning styles. It indicated that there was no difference in preferred learning styles between those two groups involved. Based on the results of the study the writer suggests that English teachers help their students identify their learning style preferences. Then identification of the students learning styles should also be followed by applying various teachers teaching techniques. The writer also suggests that the students be aware of their learning styles so they will be aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Therefore they can find the most suitable strategies for their learning. Furthermore the school is also expected to provide learning facilities or media which can help the process of English teaching-learning. Future researchers are suggested to find the relationship between students learning styles and learning strategies or investigate matching or mismatching between the students learning styles with the teachers teaching techniques.
