Abstract

ABSTRAK Ningdyah Healty Susanti.2009. Using Topic-Based Sequencing Role Play to Improve the Speaking Skill of the Tenth Year Students of SMAN 8 Malang. Thesis Undergraduate Program in English Education State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. Murdibjono M.A. Key Words Teaching technique Topic Based-Sequencing Role Play Speaking Skill The objective of the study was to describe the use of topic-based sequencing role play or creating sinetron like in improving the speaking skill of the tenth year students of SMAN 8 Malang. The preliminary study revealed that the students showed inability to speak in English during teaching and learning activities due to several reasons (1) lack of linguistic and peer support (2) limited time to speak in English during class instruction (3) low motivation since the existing instructional activities somehow created boredom (4) the students dominantly faced psychological problems such as shyness being afraid of making mistakes during speaking and being not confident to speak in front of peers. Supported by some theories experiences and previous studies in speaking skill the researcher decided to use topic based sequencing role play technique to solve the students speaking problems. For this purpose the researcher then formulated the research problem as how could the students speaking skill be improved through topic based sequencing role play technique. This study employed collaborative classroom action research design. The subjects of this research were all the students of X-2 class of SMA N 8 Malang who were currently studying in the second semester. This study was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings in which assessment was held on the second meeting. The procedures of the action included planning implementing observing and reflecting. To collect data the researcher used interview guideline field notes and observation sheet both for observing teaching-learning process and students speaking skill. The obtained data were presented and analyzed qualitatively. The qualitative data included the researcher and the students activity during teaching-learning process. The scores obtained as the improvement of the students speaking skill was also analyzed qualitatively. The finding of the research showed that topic based sequencing role play technique was effective to be used in improving the students speaking skill. Starting from 6 students (15%) who were active responding and initiating to speak in English in the preliminary study the number increases to 32 students (84.22%) after the implementation of the technique. The result also showed that the criteria of success had been achieved that was 70 % of the students actively involved in role play activities and performed acting confidently. Moreover they spoke fluently not being hesitated and afraid anymore used appropriate pronunciation language function and varied vocabulary. They also worked cooperatively and successfully performed their role play.
