Abstract

ABSTRACT Asrifaningtyas Mia. 2009. The Use of Movies in the Teaching of Speaking at itutor. net. Thesis. English Department State University of Malang. Advisor Dr. Emalia Iragiliati M.Pd. Keywords speaking media movie This study is intended to find out how is the use of movies in the teaching of speaking. It was conducted at i-tutor.net Malang because this English course applies cinema-edutainment concept in the teaching process. The subjects of the study were the teacher and students of level 1 in i-tutor.net. The findings of this study showed that the teacher of i-tutor.net Malang used a movie for every topic in the book. There were three movies used during the study. The movies are used as part of a lesson. They were used to introduce the topic of the lesson to the students. Furthermore during the teaching of speaking using the three movies the teacher conducted several classroom activities they were brainstorming drilling role-playing retelling a story questions and answers and reading aloud. The last finding in this study was about the students responses toward the use of movie in their speaking class. The result showed that the students were mostly interested in the first movie. Further for the speaking activities most of the students liked the activities conducted by the teachers. However the researcher found that some of the students were still reluctant in speaking. Based on the results of the study the researcher made some conclusions and suggestions to the use of movie in the speaking class in i-tutor.net. The researcher concluded that the teacher used the movies to introduce the topic of a lesson. Moreover the activities done in the classroom were intended to arouse students awareness on the lessons and to make them more active in class. Next the students were generally like the movies used and also the activities conducted in class. Meanwhile the researcher also made some suggestions. The first suggestion goes to the level 1 teacher of i-tutor.net Malang. It is dealing with the movie viewing and the classroom activities. For the movie viewing she is suggested not to make too many viewing repetitions since it can make the students feel bored. Further for the speaking activities she should give clearer instructions for the students before starting an activity to avoid the students confusion. The second suggestion goes to other teachers. They are suggested to use interesting instructional media such as movies in their teaching. The last suggestion goes to other researchers who are interested in conducting researches in the use of movies as instructional media. They are suggested to conduct further studies in implementing the movies in the teaching of speaking.
