Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Key words wordless picture book writing ability improvement The writing ability of the eight graders of MTs Surya Buana Malang was unsatisfactory. Most of the students were unable to develop their ideas. Thus as they started to write they stuck with the ideas. As a result less than 50% of the students scored below minimal score (3) within the range score 1-4. The Wordless picture book was selected as an alternative strategy to solve the problems. Wordless picture book is a picture book that does not include any words in it. This study was aimed at finding out whether wordle picture book can improve the students ability at MTs Surya Buana Malang in writing narrative texts. In this study the researcher expected that at least 80% of the students scored 3 within a range of 1-4 for content organization and language. This study was a collaborative classroom action research which consisted of two cycles each of which consisted of two meetings. The second cycle was done by doing an improvement on the activity. Each cycle consisted of three stages pre-activity main activity and post-activity. The subject of the study was the students of VIII A MTs Surya Buana Malang. The data from the observation and questionnaire were presented in the form of tables while the data gained from the field notes and students writings was analyzed and reported descriptively. The result of this study showed that the wordless picture book effectively improved the students ability in writing narrative texts. All students had reached the minimal standard (3). Moreover the majority of the students gave positive response towards the implementation of wordless picture book in the case that 66.67% of the students showed excitement. Furthermore they found that wordless picture book helped them in developing their ideas in writing narrative texts. Finally wordless picture book can be used to improve the students ability in writing narrative texts at MTs Surya Buana Malang. It helps students create their own story by the pictures they see rather than the words they read. It is suggested that the teacher use the wordless picture book in teaching writing since it can solve students problem in writing. It is also suggested that other researchers conduct other research that applies wordless picture book in other skills and genres.
