Abstract

ABSTRACT Nurlisa Eka. 2010. The Teaching of English to the Twelfth Graders of the Office Administration Two of the SMKN 12 Jakarta . Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. AS. Harsono Tjokrosujoso M. Pd. Key words curriculum teaching technique language. Educational institution must offer the best education for its students. The best educational program can be created by applying a creative teaching techniques based on a good reference in this case is a curriculum. A curriculum is made to guide the school to present good materials and teaching technique. Indonesian government nowadays gives full authority for the school to make its own curriculum. However the school has to make its curriculum based on the curriculum made by the government 2004 Curriculum. The improvement of the curriculum is called KTSP (Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan) or school based curriculum. This study describes the English curriculum used by SMK N 12 Jakarta. The implementation of the curriculum is described in this thesis. The implementation of the curriculum covers the materials that have been taught by the English teacher in the classroom the evaluation system and the objective of the curriculum. Analyzing the curriculum led the researcher to see the techniques used by the teacher in delivering the materials and also analyze the language used by the teacher to teach English in the classroom. The research was described qualitatively in order to have better understanding of the entity. The finding of this research showed that the curriculum s objectives were not 100% relevant with the evaluation system and the implementation of teaching English in the field. Evaluating the students by using TOEIC test did not match with the objective of the curriculum where the students are expected to be able to use English for real communication. However the teacher tried her best to make the students accustom to English by using English more frequently than Indonesian language in explaining the lesson. She used 80% English to explain the lesson in the classroom. Unfortunately the teacher did not refer to her plan in teaching. As a result the students had difficulty in answering their final test because the teacher had not finished the materials in the curriculum till the end of the semester. It was concluded that the teaching of English for the twelfth graders of Office Administration two of the SMKN 12 Jakarta did not refer to one specific teaching technique or method. The teacher combined some techniques to teach English. The teacher used explaining exercising watching movie listening to the music role playing question and answer and discussion. From all the techniques used by the teacher she used explaining more frequently than the other techniques. The teacher spent 45 minutes to explain the lesson and this condition could not hold students interest to pay attention to the explanations Finally it was suggested that the teacher should use creative techniques in teaching English and the techniques should be emphasized to improve students communicative skill because they are expected to be able to use the language in real situation. Since the school is in the process of making its school based curriculum the principal should prepare the facilities to support the program of the English teachers in SMKN 12 Jakarta. For example the principle should prepare a special room for presentation class. And the presentation class should be implemented to all majors in SMKN 12 Jakarta because all the students need to develop their speaking skill. This research needs further researcher to analyze the implementation of school based curriculum in SMKN 12 Jakarta. The other researcher should see whether the school s program has been successfully implemented or not.
