Abstract

ABSTRACT Khasanah Yunita Uswatun. 2009. The Representation of Tennessee Williams Psychological Conflict in A Streetcar Named Desire . A Thesis. English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. Misbahul Amri M.A. Keyword psychological conflict characterization homosexuality deviant personality. Homosexuality and deviant personality are the pivotal points of Tennessee Williams works. His works were always fraught with psychological depth which was believed due to his being homosexual. It is believed that the formation of his sexual orientation and feminine personality were rooted in his childhood trauma. In A Streetcar Named Desire the conflict being experienced by Stella Kowalski is almost the same with the confusion being experienced by Tennessee Williams during his life. This is what makes Stella s character as important as the other two main characters Blanche Dubois and Stanley Kowalski in dealing with the analysis of Williams psychological conflict. Therefore this thesis also incorporates Freudian psychoanalysis. Freudian analysis assumes that the mind has two components conscious and unconscious. Psychoanalysis role in literature is to reveal important information such as the motivations and hidden intentions which is essential for the purpose of understanding characters on a deeper level.
