ABSTRACT Puriastiti Laras. 2009. Improving the Seventh Graders Speaking Performance by Using Picture Cue Technique at SMP Negeri 6 Malang. Thesis Department of English Literature Faculty of Letters. State University of Malang. Advisor Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip. TESL M.Pd Key words improving speaking performance picture cue. This study is intended to improve the students speaking performance in expressing their ideas in the form of procedure using the picture cue technique. It is based on the result of the preliminary study which showed that more than 75% of Grade VII-5 students of SMP Negeri 6 Malang were weak in expressing ideas in the form of procedure. Their speaking performance scores were below 72 the standard minimum score at the school. Besides the students were not yet fully active during the teaching and learning process. They showed a lot hesitation in their speaking. Many of the students also made grammatical errors in their speaking. The design of the study is a classroom action research. The study is conducted in two cycles each of which consists of four steps namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of the study were Grade VII-5 students of SMPN 6 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data are observation checklists field notes an interview and oral tests. In the implementation of the picture cue technique several steps for the teaching and learning activities are made. The steps are 1) instructing the students to sit in group in which each group consists of one higher achiever and two lower achievers 2) giving a chance to each student to choose a topic he/she is interested 3) assigning each student to examine the pictures by brainstorming and outlining activities 4) assigning each student to make a monologue and 5) providing feedbacks toward the students performance in the form of written comments. The researcher also provided a consultation session for students who still get low score in their speaking performance. From the analysis of the teaching and learning process and the students speaking performance in the second cycle it was found out that the implementation of the picture cue technique gives satisfactory results on the improvement of the students speaking performance in expressing ideas in the form of procedure. In this case the students are active in the teaching and learning process and well-motivated to speak English and more than 75% of the students are able to improve their confidence in their speaking performance fluency and accuracy with the average score of 3.29. Finally it is suggested that the English teachers with the same class situation apply the picture cue technique as one of the alternative teaching techniques to teach speaking skills.
