Kata kunci visual spatial problem solving stoikiometri Stoikiometri merupakan materi yang cukup sulit bagi peserta didik. Menyelesaikan masalah stoikiometri sekilas mirip dengan menyelesaikan persamaan matematika. Akan tetapi berbeda dengan persamaan matematika dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan stoikiometri selain dibutuhkan kemampuan algoritma peserta didik juga perlu memahami konsep dasar dari suatu masalah. Penguasaan pemahaman konseptual dapat diperoleh dengan memahami multirepresentasi kimia. Kemampuan yang berperan penting dalam memahami multirepresentasi kimia adalah kemampuan visual spatial. Sampai saat ini sebagian besar penelitian mengenai kemampuan visual spatial pada ilmu kimia hanya dilakukan pada mahasiswa perguruan tinggi di luar negeri hanya sedikit penelitian yang mendemonstrasikan hubungan dan peran kemampuan visual spatial di SMA (Wu Shah 2003). Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara kemampuan visual spatial peserta didik dengan kinerjanya dalam problem solving pada materi stoikiometri di SMA. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantatif. Subjek penelitian adalah peserta didik kelas XI MIA SMA Ar Rohmah dan MA Plus Raden Paku yang berjumlah 70 peserta didik. Pengukuran kemampuan visual spatial dilakukan dengan tes The Purdue Visualization of Rotations Test (PVST) dan kinerja problem solving materi stoikiometri diukur dengan menggunakan tes diadopsi dari Knowledge Space Theory (KST) yang dikembangkan oleh Arasasingham (2004). Pengklarifikasian hasil problem solving peserta didik dilakukan dengan wawancara. Analisis hubungan tes PVST dan tes KST dilakukan dengan teknik analisis kuantitatif korelasi product moment Pearson. Hasil analisis menujukkan 20% peserta didik memiliki kemampuan visual spatial rendah 63% peserta didik memiliki kemampuan visual spatial cukup/rata-rata dan 17% peserta didik yang memiliki kemampuan visual spatial tinggi. Jalur belajar kritis materi stoikiometri dari peserta didik kelas XI MIA SMA Ar Rohmah Putri dan MA Plus Raden Paku untuk representasi submikroskopik (1A 1B 4A 4B) simbolik (2 3 6B 6A) dan numerik (5 7) diperoleh urutan sebagai berikut 2 6B 6A 1A 4A 1B 4B 3 5 7. Hasil uji korelasi product moment Pearson menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara kemampuan visual spatial terhadap kinerja problem solving stoikiometri tingkat sekolah menengah atas dengan signifikansi sebesar 0 33. Variabel kemampuan visual spatial menyumbangakn 10 9% kinerja problem solving stoikiometri sehingga kemampuan visual spatial dibutuhkan dalam menyelesaikan masalah stoikiometri oleh peserta didik di tingkat SMA. Keywords visual spatial problem solving stoichiometry Stoichiometry is a subject that is quite difficult for learners. Solving stoichiometric problem seems similar to solving a mathematical equation. However different with mathematical equations solving stoichiometric problems requires not only algorithmic capabilities but also needs to understand the basic concepts of the problem. Mastering conceptual understanding can be obtained by understanding chemical multirepresentations. The ability that plays an important role in understanding chemical multirepresentations is visual spatial ability. Nowadays most research on chemical visual spatial abilities is only done to college learners only a few studies have demonstrated the relationship and role of visual spatial abilities at high school (Wu Shah 2003). This study was aimed to determine the relationship visual spatial abilities to learner performance in stoichiometric problem solving at high school. This research uses quantitative descriptive approach. The subjects of the study were learners XI grade science SMA Ar Rohmah and MA Plus Raden Paku which are 70 learners. Visual spatial performance measurements were performed using the Purdue Visualization of Rotations Test (PVST) and the stoichiometric problem solving performance was measured using test adopted from Knowledge Space Theory (KST) developed by Arasasingham (2004). The clarifying of learners problem solving results is done by interview. The analysis of PVST and KST was done by quantitative analysis technique of Pearson product moment correlation. The results showed that 20% of the learners had low spatial visual ability 63% of the learners had average spatial visual ability and 17% of learners had high spatial visual ability. The stoichiometric critical learning pathway from grade XI grade science SMA Ar Rohmah and MA Plus Raden Paku for submicroscopic (1A - 1B - 4A - 4B) symbolic (2 - 3 - 6B - 6A) and numeric (5 - 7) representations obtained the following sequence 2 - 6B - 6A - 1A - 4A - 1B - 4B - 3 - 5 - 7. The result of Pearson product moment correlation test showed that there is a significant correlation between visual spatial ability to the stoichiometric problem solving performance at high school level which is 0.33. The variable of visual spatial ability contributes 10.9% to stoichiometric problem solving performance so visual spatial ability is needed in solving stoichiometric problems by learners at high school level.
