Bruce Almighty a 2003 movie by Tom Shadyac is a comedy film which critics often take its story at face value for example seeing the God rsquo s portrayal in the film compared to other films. Such observation overlooks the film rsquo s close affinity with Christian teachings and references mdash from the reference of the biblical version of the creation of the universe to the direct quotation of a Bible verse especially on purgatory and the seven deadly sins. This article shall demonstrate that the film is actually an unexpected purgatory for the sinful and selfish main character Bruce Nolan. The film shows how God cleanses Bruce turning him into the best he can be the selfless Bruce. Even with its comedic elements the film successfully depicts how ungrateful humans are prone to committing sins. Using film studies (analysis of the film s aesthetic components mise-en-scene camera movements and placement as well as dialogue) the writers find out that Bruce indeed commits the seven sins. After an episode of selfishness and chaos Bruce reaches an epiphany where he realizes that he needs God's assistance to be better.
