Abstract

Vocabulary is an important element in teaching English. Most students were low at vocabulary. Based on the pre-research the eighth graders of class 8-G at SMPN 1 Sidoarjo of the academic year 2020/2021 had a problem mastering the vocabulary. This research aims to find out whether the use of digital flashcards can improve the students rsquo vocabulary mastery. This research used Classroom Action Research as the research design. The strategies of the media using digital flashcards were done in one cycle that consisted of three meetings. The procedure of the research consisted of four stages that is planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of this research were 30 Eighth Graders of class G at SMPN 1 Sidoarjo. The finding shows that digital flashcards can improve the students rsquo vocabulary mastery. The steps involved were 1) Explained the materials about the descriptive text 2) Showed digital flashcards of adjectives one by one and the meaning via the ProfProfs website 3) Repeated the cards after finished shows the cards 4) Drilled the students to pronounce the adjective and the meaning that showed in digital flashcards 5) Gave the example of descriptive text and asked the students to mention the adjective based on picture 6) Asked the students to mention the vocabulary that they have got 7) Gave a worksheet to enhance the students rsquo understanding. The researcher used qualitative and quantitative methods in collecting the data. The qualitative data were from observation interviews questionnaires and documents (photo and the students rsquo worksheets). The quantitative data were from the vocabulary tests (pre-test and post-test). The progress of the students in mastering vocabulary using digital flashcards can be seen from the score result of pre-test and post-test. The students rsquo mean score in the pre-test is 68.16 and the post-test is 92.83. It can be summarized that the use of digital flashcards as the media of teaching English vocabulary does improve the students rsquo vocabulary mastery.
