Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the teaching-learning method of English speaking in Kampung Inggis Pare particularly the method and strategies applied by the Big Ben Course (BBC) in carrying out their class. Also to determine the effectiveness of the course towards the students rsquo speaking skill. Immersion programs were first introduced in 1965 the programs were developed to provide Canada s English group to learn Canada s other official languages. Since then immersion programs have been adopted in many different areas across US and Canada. The research has shown that immersion participants acquire functional proficiency in French that surpasses other forms of second language instruction compared to Immersion Program (Genesee 1987). BBC as one of the courses in immersion programs area Kampung Inggris Pare was chosen because BBC classes are focusing on speaking with British Council material and British English. The six participants of the three-month BBC were taken as the entire population in this study. Speaking tests through questions as an oral production assessment by pre-test and post-test is used to assess grammar accuracy pronunciation vocabulary usage and fluency. An interview was held with the BBC rsquo s instructor to get in-depth information throughout this research. Finally the researcher found that the three-month BBC had a good impact on the students rsquo English-speaking skill. It is proven by the mean of 59.6% that was quite effective by the Hake criteria (1999). It indicates that the learning by doing method combined with the effortless English system is considered successful with result quite effective and some students got unsatisfactory results.
