Abstract

Comic books are taking a new turn as a medium of learning. The combination of pictures (visual) and language (verbal) aspects in comics is arguably one of the contributors to why comic books are more and more considered a way to learn. With this regard the present study is looking into a bilingual comic book series catered for young readers entitled ldquo Little Dim Sum Warriors rdquo . The study aims to analyze the first two installments of the series in terms of ideational intersemiotic complementarity and how the readers are learning vocabularies from the comic. To achieve this objective the study uses Royce rsquo s Ideational Intersemiotic Complementarity framework to map out and categorize any visual-verbal relation that occurred. Through the analysis the study found that the relation mostly falls between repetition and collocation which then revealed that repeating meaning in both verbal and visual aspects is very effective in learning. Other relations however such as those that appeared as anonymy or synonymy might require the attendance of teachers or parents to guide the meaning-making process for the young readers.
