Abstract

Prayogo M.Pd M.Ed. (2) Drs. Andi Muhtar M.A. Keywords Reading Preferences Junior High School. Reading has an important role in the steps of learning. Every person has her or his own way of reading. From the time duration of reading pages of reading materials to read and purpose of reading people can be different one from another. This study was conducted to find out Junior High School students reading preferences which focuses on the time of reading place or venue of reading text types the length of reading materials format genre device academic assignment use of dictionary (manual or online) ways of reading taking a note while reading strategies of reading additional information of material and language difficulty. This study employed a quantitative research design which was a survey to collect the data. The total respondents for this study were 145 students all of whom were the eighth graders. The instrument used to collect the data was online questionnaire which was google form. The findings reveal that (a) the time most preferred by the students is night-time (b) the places in which they preferred to read are bedroom and classroom (c) the type of text they preferred is novel or story-book (d) the students preferred 0 25-page book to read (e) the format they preferred is digital based reading (f) the genre they preferred is comic for fiction and biography for non-fiction (g) the device they preferred is smartphone (h) they prefer using digital format to do their assignment whether it is short or long reading (i) the students prefer using the dictionary while reading (j) the way of reading preferred by the students is silent-reading (k) the students prefer taking notes whether on the same or different paper (l) the students do not bother to read using skimming or scanning (m) students do not try to find additional information for their homework (n) the students prefer to read passage with simplified English. The results were presented with pie chart from google form and were analyzed again to be presented with the table In conclusion the study shows that the students reading preferences on the 14 aspects among students differ and vary. It is suggested that teachers and parents make use of the findings to assist their students and children in the reading activities and other researchers to utilize the findings as reference of their research.
