Abstract

Academic speaking is proposed so that students can speak English at an advanced level fluently accurately and can be accepted in formal activities. Therefore the right strategy in the learning process to acquire this skill is important to know. The purpose of this study was to determine the academic speaking strategies used by 4th semester students of the English Department Universitas Negeri Malang especially in doing academic speaking task class discussion and presentation. This study used a survey design where the data were analyzed descriptively. The ASSESS questionnaire designed by Rui M. Schroeder PhD was adapted and adjusted as an instrument to collect data. The sample of this study was fifty-eight students. The result of this study shows that the EFL students pay attention to pronunciation and learn from good presenters during doing their general preparation for speaking task strategies. While joining a class discussion they pay attention to how people agree and disagree and also listen attentively to what classmates say. In doing presentations EFL students do rehearsal and give self-reward. Therefore the findings of this study recommend the teachers and students to be better in adjusting their teaching and learning strategies to improve academic speaking skill.
