Abstract

Junior high students are required to master four basic skills including writing one of writing competencies eighth grade students should possess is writing an invitation text. Based on preliminary study the researcher concluded that there was a factor that made the eighth graders have difficulties in writing. First students had minimum background English knowledge. Second students were bored when they learned English. Third learning method was traditional that create a boring learning situation. Therefore cue card is needed to help them improve writing the invitation text. The purpose of this study is to discover if teaching invitation text through cue cards improves writing skill of eighth graders. The design used in this research is Action Research that adopted a model of Classroom Action Research by Kemmis and Mac Taggart (1988). The analysis result of the students rsquo writing showed a significant improvement that most students passed the standard minimum score. The improvement happened not only on each aspect of students rsquo writing but also on the content organization language use vocabulary increasing and writing mechanism. The result of observing the data of students rsquo final writing showed that twenty eight students (93.3%) got the scores ge 75 and two students (6.7%) got the scores le 75. In other words the media of using cue cards to improve the students rsquo writing skill was successful. Furthermore the mean of the students rsquo final writing had achieved the criteria of success which was more than 75 that was 86.
