Abstract

Reading comprehension is an important aspect of language learning because it is the foundation for a lot of what EFL students learn. Since this ability is important to learn language the role of a lecturer is also vital to help the students to obtain material effectively and improve their reading comprehension through the specific technique to teach about understanding of main ideas patterns of organization summary and critical thinking. In this study flipped classroom is selected as teaching reading strategy which is used in the learning process. Flipped classroom is an increasingly popular kind of blended learning in today s educational era which principally refers to an instructional method that flipped the traditional teaching model. Therefore this study explored the impact of flipped classroom learning model in reading comprehension of ELE students as well as their attitude towards flipping. A quasi-experimental approach and survey research design were used in the present study. The subjects of this study were taken from the third semester students of English Language Education Study Program of Universitas Islam Nahdlatul Ulama Jepara who were taking Interpretive Reading. The pretest posttest and questionnaire results were used to collect the data for this study. Students in the experimental group were taught reading comprehension by applying flipped classroom through Sevima Edlink Whatsapp Group Gmail and Google Meet Apps whereas students in the control group were taught using virtual face-to-face activities (without Sevima Edlink apps). The data obtained were statistically analyzed using SPSS statistics 25. Findings of the present study suggest that there is an improvement in students rsquo test scores from 65.833 in the pre-test to 70.521 in the post-test. The result of Mann-Whitney test revealed that the improvement was significant. The finding revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group (p lt .05) on the post-test. Furthermore it was also found from the students rsquo perception that after implementing flipped classroom the lecturer and students had good interaction in the interpretive reading class. Therefore the implementation of flipped classroom could be regarded as one of effective techniques to teach reading comprehension for ELE students. The result of this study can be used as a reference for further research and further analysis about this topic is still needed because the current study only focus on literal and interpretive comprehension level.
