Abstract

Textbooks are one of the main instruction tools for organizing teachers pedagogical practices. Textbooks also play a major role in learners rsquo learning experience. Textbooks facilitate both teachers and learners with language instruction in the teaching and learning process. On the other hand as the source of social and cultural information textbooks provide the dominant ideas and attitudes of society. The hidden curriculum is delivered by constructing learners rsquo ideology which will affect their activities interactions and social relationship. Thus it transmits society culture to the learners on a particular moment. In this topic the hidden curriculum also affects the way learners interpret labeling sexism amongst males and females. This research aims to discover the patriarchal culture of sexism against female in English Student rsquo s Book for SMP/MTS Grade VII since textbook is one of the vehicles for gender equality in pedagogical practices. This research employs a descriptive qualitative design by carrying out a content analysis framework to dig out a better and deep understanding of data collection. Furthermore the explanation of the result can give a better understanding of how certain gender is depicted. Based on the data presented from the evaluation checklist it can be inferred that (1) Males have a higher frequency of picture representations (54%) than females (46%) (2) Males had a greater percentage of written text representation (59%) than females (41%) (3) Male obtains higher percentage in the frequency of name appearances which is 51% (4) Males present the higher variation in the representation of roles and activities which is 18 out of 29 and (5) Males show the higher frequency of appearances in roles and activities which is 19 out of 31. It can be concluded that males gain a higher amount in all the variables that have been analyzed in the textbook. However because the differences in evaluation checklist findings between males and girls are not too big it is possible that the differences are not significant. To obtain a more detailed result the researcher conducts a comprehensive analysis. In line with that the findings also found that there are representations of women worked in a service field. Women are represented as fruit vendors wearing caps and rowing boats for example. In contrast there is a picture of a male soccer player training with a ball. There is a clear contrast in the comparison with women working in the service and males being referred to as active characters. This depiction underlines the fact that this book contains gender inequality in patriarchal society.
