Abstract

Mathematics has significance role to improve students thinking ability. Student should be train to solve mathematics problem. Therefore learning to solve mathematics problem should be started in elementary school. The early observation that was conducted at the 2 grade of SDN 1 Kebonsari Malang shows that teaching method used is teacher centered where teaching-learning process is dominated by teacher. Moreover the student tends to be passive in classroom activity and lack of ability in solving a problem. Therefore it is very important to carry out a new appropriate education method that is able to train student to solve problems. One of the method that can be used to improved student s problem solving skills is realistic mathematics education. This research is classroom action research that was done under two cycles. It was carried out on April 4 until 21 2007 towards 18 students. The outcomes of the research are written descriptively. Applying this method the writer started by giving the students contextual problems that was equipped with appropriate supported equipments. The problems are then discussed in the small group of students. After that the result of the group discussion would be presented in classroom discussion in order to get conclusions from the problems given. The outcome shows that realistic mathematic education is able to improve the problem solving skill of 2 grade students of SDN 1 Kebonsari Malang at the subject of divisions. For the next research realistic mathematics education should be applied more interestingly by expanding the problems into more contextual problems and using more appropriate supported equipments.
