Abstract

The present study aims to conduct a stylistic analysis on Airbnb Instagram captions as means of tourism advertising on Instagram. The present study employed a qualitative method to dissect the linguistic features of Airbnb Instagram captions on a graphological lexical and syntactic level and also investigated the persuasion strategies employed. The data were Airbnb Instagram captions collected through purposive sampling. The findings revealed that Airbnb employed various linguistic features to create engaging and persuasive captions. On a graphological level it employed full stop comma hyphen and parentheses. On a lexical level it utilized favorable words compounds short action verbs neologism and second-person pronouns. On a syntactic level it employed imperative sentences and varied sentence lengths as well as sentence structures. In addition Airbnb also employed pathos (emotional appeal) and ethos (credibility) as its strategies to persuade the readers. These findings thus shed light on the usage of linguistic features and persuasive strategies to produce an advertising language that is presumably effective to promote tourism destinations and generate high engagement on social media particularly Instagram.
