Abstract

In learning English four skills have to be mastered listening speaking reading and writing. To master those skills learners need to master vocabulary since vocabulary is crucial for learning English. A preliminary study at SMP Negeri 9 Malang revealed that grade VII students struggled to understand the text in English due to a lack of vocabulary. For six weeks the preliminary study was carried out at SMPN 9 Malang as part of the internship program. The researcher recognized the students vocabulary issue. Most VII-B students appeared to still be lacking in vocabulary. There were only 20% of the students who achieved the minimum standard score on the vocabulary test. The average of students rsquo test results was 65 which was below the standard score of 70. By implementing the online word-wall-based strategy the students can learn vocabulary in different ways so it helps them avoid boredom from the monotonous teaching and learning methods. This strategy was fun and motivational. The students enjoyed the learning because they just needed to read and memorize words from colorful media and they can make the media by themselves. The researcher utilized a Word-Wall Based Strategy with which a group of words that cover Nouns Verbs Adjectives and Adverbs are displayed on the wall. There were five procedures in implementing Word-Wall Based Strategy which was (1) introducing vocabulary (2) analyzing descriptive text characteristics with students (3) explaining Word-Wall (4) explaining parts of speech and creating a word wall media and (5) reviewing vocabulary. This study s design was a Collaborative Classroom Action Research consisting of four steps planning implementing observing and reflecting. In this study one cycle of four meetings was carried out. The participants in this study were from the VII-B class at SMPN 9 Malang. There were 30 students involved in this study. The observation checklist vocabulary test and students questionnaire were used to collect this study data. The researcher determined that the strategy was successful if the results met two criteria (1) 80 percent of students achieved a score of 70 or higher and (2) 80 percent of them were actively involved in the learning process. The findings of this study revealed that by using Word-Wall based strategy the students vocabulary score improved and had achieved the criteria of success which was indicated by their score in every meeting and final test in only one cycle. The result showed that 93.3% of students could achieve the minimum standard score in the vocabulary test. The students average score increased from 65 to 82.5. Furthermore by actively participating in the strategy s implementation 96 percent of the students demonstrated positive attitude toward the strategy. It can be concluded that the Word-Wall-Based strategy improved the students vocabulary mastery. English teachers of SMP Negeri 9 Malang are suggested to use a Word-Wall-Based strategy as an alternative strategy to teach vocabulary. Moreover further researchers are suggested to use Word-Wall-Based strategy in different settings subjects and levels.
