Abstract

The present research was Classroom Action Research. This study aims to discover the improving aspect in reading comprehension and also the exciting aspects of teaching narrative text using comic strips to improve the reading comprehension skill of the 10th graders of SMAN 4 Malang.The subject was 34 students of tenth-grade science (X MIPA 3) of SMAN 4 Malang covering 12 male and 22 female students. The instruments used to collect the data were an interview a reading test observation checklist field note and questionnaire. The findings showed that the implementation of comic strips could improve the students rsquo English reading comprehension skills in narrative text especially in grasping the idea of the text. It showed that there were 83.9% of students who score reached 76. It covered 28 out of 34 students. The data was based on the students rsquo assignments and tests. In addition the data from the field notes and observation sheet of teaching and learning activities showed that most of the students were actively engaged in learning activities. They were eager to share their ideas and to deliver questions to both teacher and classmates. Moreover the data derived from the questionnaire showed that students expressed positive attitudes to comic strips by 94.1%. Most of them admitted that comic strips helped them to read and understand the narrative text better and improve their English reading comprehension skills. Finally it is recommended that comic strips could be implemented as an additional technique in improving the students rsquo skills and to be considered as an optional source for further research regarding comic strips.
