Abstract

ABSTRACT Restianto Javian Inggit. 2015. The Understanding of Intrinsic Elements of Wayang Story in Javanese of 10th Graders in SMKN 2 Malang. Key Words intrinsic elements text Javanese wayang stories Wayang is one of Indonesian native performing arts that is growing rapidly in Java and Bali. The stories in Wayang performances usually are taken from the old books such as Ramayana Mahabharata Pustaka Raja Purwa dan Purwakanda. Wayang stories has been taught from primary school secondary school high school until in the university level. In East Java the language used in teaching wayang stories is Javanese as the most frequently used language by the people. The text of wayang story is divided into two written and spoken. The story learned in school is in the form of written text. The story used for this study was taken from gagrak or balungan in Wayang Kulit Purwa Jawatimuran. The text used was entitled Laire Gathutkaca . The study was aimed to determine the studentsability in understanding the intrinsic elements of wayang stories in Javanese. Intrinsic elements can be defined as characters settings plot and theme. This study was using descriptive quantitative approach. The population of the study is 612 students from 17 classrooms. The sample of the study was taken as 3 classrooms. The research data was students score in understanding intrinsic elements in wayang stories. The data of the study was students score. The research instruments used were scoring rubric to analyze the data. The students ability in understanding wayang stories was measured by a scoring reference guide (PAP) in scale of 5. The scoring was divided into 5 scales. Each scale is defined in letter A B C D E. A is qualified as very good if the students reach the ability in range 85%- 100%. B is defined as good in range 75%-84%. C is qualified as enough in range 60%-74%. D means less in range 49%-59%. E is qualified as very less in range 0%-39%. According to the data analysis it was concluded 4 results of the study. First the students could determine the characters correctly. Second the students could understand the settings of the story very well. Third the students could understand the plot of the story correctly. Forth the students could define the theme of story correctly. The students understanding of the story was affected by different factors such as hometown question items and the students knowldge about wayang in Javanese. According to the study there are some things that must be given attention by students teachers and the future researchers. First for the students it is expected to learn more about the Javanese especially about wayang stories. The wayang stories have deep moral values and character education. Second for the teachers it is expected to develop a book or media for the students in helping them to learn about wayang stories in Javanese. Third for the future researchers it is expected i the study can be used as reference to conduct another variation of study especially the study that deals with intrinsic element of wayang stories in Javanese.
