Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dua fokus penelitian. Pertama karakteristik unsur intrinsik yang meliputi tema tokoh perwatakan alur setting titik pandang gaya bahasa dan amanat. Kedua karakteristik unsur ekstrinsik meliputi nilai-nilai (agama dan budaya) latar belakang pengarang dan situasi sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Penelitian ini juga termasuk dalam jenis penelitian deskriptif. Desain penelitian yang digunakan berupa studi dokumen. SMP Negeri 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro dipilih sebagai lokasi penelitian karena sekolah tersebut terbuka dengan kegiatan pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan belum pernah dijadikan lokasi untuk penelitian yang sejenis dengan penelitian ini. Selain itu sekolah tersebut dapat dijadikan sumber data yang mendukung dalam penelitian ini. Data penelitian ini berupa dua puluh empat naskah cerpen karya siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro. Sumber penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro tahun pelajaran 2014/2015. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu panduan analisis data dan lembar-lembar analisis data yang berisi format dan tabel yang digunakan untuk mengklasifikasi data mengenai unsur instrinsik dan unsur ekstrinsikdalam cerpen karya siswa yang diperoleh. Tahapan yang dilakukan meliputi tahap persiapan pelaksanaan dan penyelesaian. Analisis karakteristik cerpen siswa kelas VII menghasilkan dua butir simpulan. Pertama berdasarkan karakteristik unsur intrinsik tema yang diangkat adalah tema-tema umum yaitu tema persahabatan dan keluarga. Pemunculan tokoh banyak yang kurang rinci banyak yang dimunculkan hanya sebatas nama dan tidak diberikan keterangan lebih rinci dari tokoh. Perwatakan yang dimiliki tokoh kurang kuat yang dimunculkan sebagian besar hanya perwatakan protagonis saja dan disampaikan secara tersurat. Alurnya didominasi alur progresif. Sebagian besar setting disebutkan secara langsung oleh pengarang. Hanya terdapat dua titik pandang yaitu narrator omniscient dan narrator observer. Cerpen yang menggunakan gaya bahasa permajasan dan diksi yang menarik hanya sedikit sebagian besar menggunakan gaya bahasa sederhana yang dipakai sehari-hari. Kedua berdasarkan karakteristik unsur ekstrinsik nilai-nilai yang ada pada lingkungan sekitar pengarang (siswa) seperti nilai agama dan budaya tidak tercermin pada cerpen yang diciptakannya. Terdapat banyak kebudayaan lokal yang khas dan unik pada daerah sekitar SMPN 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro akan tetapi tidak ada satupun yang dimunculkan oleh siswa. Simpulan akhir penelitian ini menghasilkan tiga saran. Bagi peneliti selanjutnya diharapkan dapat memperluas ruang lingkup kajian. Bagi guru bahasa dan sastra Indonesia perlu memperhatikan pentingnya keterkaitan unsur intrnsik dan ekstrinsik dalam prosa fiksi atau pada hal ini adalah cerpen karya siswa dalam mencapai pemahaman dari isi cerita secara mendalam. Key Words Short Story intrinsic elements extrinsic elements. This study aims to describe two focus of research. First the characteristics of intrinsic elements that include theme character characterization plot setting point of view style and mandate. Secondly the characteristics of extrinsic elements include values (religious and cultural) the background of the author and social situation. This study used a qualitative approach. The study also carried out in a descriptive research. The study s design used is in the form of documents study SMP Negeri 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro chosen as the study site because the school is open to development activities of science and has never been used as a location for research similar to this study. In addition the school can be used as a source of data to support this research. This research data in the form of twenty-four manuscript of short story by seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro. The source of this study were students grade VII SMP Negeri 2 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro in academic year 2014/2015. Instruments used in this research is a guide of data analysis and data analysis sheets containing formatting and tables used to classify data on the intrinsic elements and extrinsic elements in short story by students obtained. Steps taken including preparation execution and settlement. Analysis of the characteristics of short stories by grade VII students produce two conclusion. First based on the characteristics of intrinsic elements the theme issued is the common themes the theme of friendship and family. The appearance of characters which were not put in detailed many of which appear merely in names and not given further details of the figures. Disposition owned of characters are less powerful characters shown largely are dispositive protagonist only and conveyed explicitly. The plot is dominated by progressive plot.Most of the settings mentioned directly by the author. There are only two points of view the omniscient narrator and the observer narrator. There are only a few numbers of short stories using mmajasi figure of speech and interesting diction mostly are using simple figure of speech used for daily speech. Second based on the characterisitcs of extrinsic values presented in the environment of the suthors (students) such as religious and cultural values do not reflected in the short stories written. There present many local cultures which are unique and and typical in the area around SMPN 3 Sumberrejo-Bojonegoro however there are none shown by students. The conclusion of this research there are three suggestions. For further researcher it is expected to be able to widen the scope of research. For language and indonesian literature teacher there needs to consider the importance of intrinsic elements typical and the extrinsic elements in a fiction prose or in this case is the short stories made by students in achieving an understanding of the story contents profoundly.
