Abstract

This study aims to find out how the characters in The Importance of Being Earnest flout violate opt out and clash the conversational maxims and what the functions of those breaches. The result of this study is expected to enrich the study of conversational maxims and to show that linguistic tools can be used to gain more understanding of literary works as well as to gain understanding on everyday conversation. The drama text of The Importance of Being Earnest is used as the data source in this study because the drama is about creating fictive persons and leading a double life to escape from social obligation. Another reason for choosing this drama is because there are breaches of the conversational maxims expressed through the utterances of the characters. Previously the preliminary study was conducted at the first time I read the drama text. The utterances in the drama contain lies which might be categorized into violations of the maxim of quality. The data are in the form of utterances. They are numbered and classified into each type of breach based on the context. Together with classifying the data the functions of the breaches are also interpreted. The results of this study show that there are 24 flouts 31 violations 4 opt outs and 2 clashes of conversational maxims in The Importance of Being Earnest. The most frequent breach is the violation of the maxim of quality. There are 30 violations of this maxim. The frequent violation of the maxim of quality is related to the plot of the drama. The Importance of Being Earnest is about two men that lead a double life. Jack Worthing pretends to have a brother named Ernest in town to get away from his social obligation as a guardian of a girl in the country. His bestfriend Algernon Moncrieff pretends to have an invalid friend named Bunbury to be able to escape from his social obligation as a member of high-society. They create lies to keep their secrets. Those lies cause the frequent violations of the maxim of quality. The least breached maxim is the maxim of relevance it. The maxim of relevance is violated by the speaker to avoid telling the truth. There is only 1 violation of this maxim in The Importance of Being Earnest because in this drama the speakers also do other breaches to other maxims in attempt to avoid telling the truth which is by flouting the maxim of quality flouting the maxim of relevance violating the maxim of quality and opting out the maxim of quantity. Based on the results of this study future studies can apply other linguistic tools to interpret literary works or applying the same tool to a different subject with a different focus.
