Abstract

Keywords teaching technique English vocabulary According to the decree of the Ministry of National Education number 22 year 2006 English is officially taught as a local content subject started from grade IV. To master English vocabulary is the basic component to be learned because without learning English vocabulary no one can learn English better. Thus the researcher conducted a research entitled The Teaching of English Vocabulary at SDK Santa Maria III Malang . This study was aimed at describing the teaching of English vocabulary done by the teacher to the students the problems faced by the English teacher in teaching English vocabulary and the solutions done by the English teacher to solve the problems in teaching English vocabulary. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The instruments used in this study were observations questionnaires and an interview guide. The subject of this study was one English teacher. The findings of this study showed that the English teacher usually taught English vocabulary by translating the English words into Indonesian directly. The problems faced by the teacher were how to teach the pronunciation of what was written and also the writing of what was heard (spelling). To solve the problems the teacher always gave about five to ten minutes to the students for memorizing some new English vocabulary and then she gave a dictation task using those new words. After that she asked some students to read aloud their dictation sentences to know whether the students could pronounce the words correctly or not. The conclusions of this study were (1) the teaching of English vocabulary at SDK Santa Maria III Malang was mostly done by translating the English words directly into Indonesian so the students could forget the words easily (2) the students always ask the teacher the meaning of the English words without trying to memorize or understand the English words and its meanings related to the lesson. Based on the results of the study the English teacher should teach new English vocabulary in almost every meeting of English lesson to enlarge the students English vocabulary which can support them in learning English at the class. Next the English teacher should teach English vocabulary using other teaching approaches such as using games repetition and many more rather than only by translating the English words directly into Indonesian. The teacher should also facilitate the children in expressing themselves by asking them to speak in English in the classroom by using a lot of different activities because that can raise the students confidence and enthusiasm. It is also important that the English teacher have and use the English syllabus and lesson plans in teaching English. Another suggestion is for the future researchers to conduct a further study on the teaching technique of English vocabulary such as repetition visual instructional media.
