Abstract

Key words Authentic videos YouTube the teaching of English Teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia is considered challenging since it is often found that the teachers are faced by the situation in which they cannot make the students actively involved in the learning process. Therefore English teachers in Indonesia have to become more creative and innovative in their teaching in order to make the students interested in learning English. Accordingly teachers are highly advised to expand their knowledge related to the development of English teaching. One of the most important developments with regard to English teaching is the use of technology. The Internet is one of the most important and popular technological advancements in modern society and offers a lot of things to explore to support TEFL including materials to browse which vary from printed audio and visual materials.YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the Internet which offers many authentic materials in the form of videos which can be used in English classes. This research aimed to investigate how YouTube videos can be used in an English classroom by answering the research questions What kinds of YouTube videos are used for teaching and learning process What are the reasons of choosing the videos that were used What kinds of teaching and learning activities were conducted using the videos What facilities are used How do the students respond to the use of videos This research used a descriptive qualitative design. The researcher used a natural setting one class with one teacher in grade IX at SMPN 12 Jember as the source of the data and the researcher herself is the key instrument. The data collected is in the form of field notes pictures video recording students questionnaires and interview scripts. The result of the study described the use of authentic video taken from YouTube in the teaching of English to the ninth graders of SMPNegeri 12 Jember. Overall the results of this research shows thatvideos provided on YouTube are of different categories that can be used as materials for teaching English as long as they are suitable to the topic being taught. It was also found that the authentic videos used were chosen based on some important considerations such as visualizations or imagery the language use the relevance of the videos to the topic and content and the popularity of the content for most of the students. The videos were used for two major purposes that is to motivate the students at the beginning of the lesson to introduce the topic also for the main part of the lesson to facilitate the students to learn the topic.
