Abstract

Key words Web materials searching engine writing descriptive texts Junior High School Searching engine is a popular search tool used to find any information from huge amounts of websites. It stores this information in a database and searches it by keyword when it receives search request. Searching engine can also be used to find Web Materials related to descriptive texts. Descriptive text is a text that describes what a particular person place or thing is like. The researcher thought that the eighth graders should be able to write descriptive texts at their current level. Therefore the researcher used Web Materials via searching engine to teach writing descriptive texts on the eighth graders of State Junior High School 2 of Papar Kediri Regency. The purpose of this research is to find out the significant difference of the students achievement in writing descriptive texts between the experimental group taught using Web Materials and the control group who is not taught using Web Materials. Then the researcher will be able to know whether or not the experimental group gain higher achievement. This research used nonequivalent pretest-posttest design in order to measure the result of pre-test and post-test. The researcher used intact group that the school had from the beginning of the semester as the subjects. The subjects were the Class 8A and Class 8B of State Junior High School 2 of Papar Kediri Regency. The researcher decided Class 8A as experimental group and Class 8B as control group. The data collection was done by giving pre-test at the beginning and then the researcher gave treatment in the learning process and post-test at the end. The t-test for independent samples was used to compare the result of pre-test of both groups in order to test whether or not the difference was significant. After finding that there was a significant difference of pre-test scores the researcher used t-test for independence samples to compare the result of post-test of both groups. Based on the data analysis of pre-test scores the researcher found that the probability (sig.) 0.902 0.05 and the t value (0.1240) t table (69 0.05) (1.995). It meant that the null hypothesis there was no significant difference in the result of pre-test scores of both experimental and control groups could not be rejected. Then the researcher compared the result of post-test by using t-test for independent samples and found that the probability (sig.) 0.000 0.05 and the t value (6.352) t table (69 0.05) (1.995). It meant that the null hypothesis there was no significant difference in the result of post-test scores of both experimental and control groups was rejected. Because of the difference was significant the researcher concluded that the achievement in writing descriptive texts of the students who used Web Materials via searching engine was higher than the achievement in writing descriptive texts of the students who did not use Web Materials via searching engine. Based on the findings the researcher suggested that the English teachers should always assist and guide the students by preparing the keywords and materials properly. The school should provide the facilities which support the use of Web Materials so that the students could apply and learn English using Internet. For future researchers who might conduct studies on the similar topic is suggested to develop the teaching strategy using Internet resources especially Web Materials on the ability in writing descriptive texts of the eight graders.
