Abstract

Key words speaking fourth grade fifth grade. There are few elementary schools which teach English in all language skills listening speaking reading and writing. From those few schools SD Muhammadiyah 1 Malang held English speaking activities on their students to improve students speaking skill. This study is aimed to collect information about the teaching of speaking conducted at SD Muhammadiyah 1 Malang especially in the fourth and fifth grade students. In addition it is expected to give examples of how to teach speaking to other English teachers. The design of this study is descriptive since it is designed to obtain information concerning the current status of a phenomenon. Fourth and fifth grade students were chosen since English is officially a local content for the fourth and fifth graders. The instruments used are observation checklist and interview guide. The data of this study were collected through three observations on three different classes namely class IV A IV B and V. Furthermore the teacher s interview and video recording were employed to complete the data from class observations. The data taken were analyzed classified and presented in accordance with the research problems namely the materials and media the teaching techniques the classroom language and the assessment used. The findings showed that the materials used were dialogs while the media used were course books flashcards toys puppet Compact Disk bank notes and coins. It was also found that the teaching technique used were question-and-answer modeling role-play pronunciation drillings and a guessing game. In accordance with the classroom language the teacher used both English and Indonesian during the teaching learning process. She employed many classroom languages such as English expressions and English instructions. In addition this study found that the teacher employed performance assessment although she did not use any scoring rubric. In conclusion the teaching of speaking involves several teaching media and teaching techniques which suit the fourth and fifth grade students. However the teacher did not employ any scoring rubric for the speaking activities. Therefore it is suggested that the English teacher provide many and various speaking activities and employs scoring rubric. Besides she should not translate all of the instructions and explanations. The school is suggested to provide various teaching media. The last suggestion is for further researchers. It is expected that the further researchers to complete this study and conduct more and detailed observations of this study.
