Abstract

Keywords debate argumentative writing Writing competence requires learners understanding of sentence construction and sentence organization into a text. Focusing in argumentative writings ability of the EFL learners besides vocabulary mastery there were at least three problems belonged to the the students content organization and stylistic aspects. With its complexity and complicated contents among the other genres of essay writings argumentative writing teaching and learning process needs certain method to enhance the learners mastery to write effectively. This study utilized in-class debate as the method to facilitate the EFL learners to improve the argumentative writing ability. Employing Classroom Action Research (CAR) this study was conducted at Argumentative Writing class A-A 2011 English Department State University of Malang. The procedure for the action research emphasized the process writing. During the debate activity the students discussed about some controversial issues with their teammates and set into two sides advocating their opinions and argumentations in the classroom through this activity they could create stronger outlines focusing the content aspect. There were some essential procedures in utilizing debate in the EFL class (1) providing some motions to debate on the earlier meeting so the students can browse the sources (2) dividing the class into two parties for proposition and opposition (3) providing the teams the case-building period (4) letting the teams debate at the same time taking notes of debate flow on the debate organizer (5) employing the students to create outline based on their notes after debating and (6) allowing the students to develop the outline into draft to be revised for the on the next meeting. The instruments of this study covered the students works portofolio fieldnotes and observation checklists. After the implementation of the action research in two cycles the study showed successful result as 87.50% of the students in the class scored equal to/or more than 81 as the minimum score of the criteria of success. The improvement was identified from some aspects content aspect (20.83%) organization (12.50%) and stylistic skill (20.28%). The other essential improvement was the students courage to write more sophisticated and wider issues from education to social and politics. These various topics were also the indication of the the students writing competence improvement. In teaching and learning process it became more active as the students engaged with the other students in responding/comenting their friends argumentations. In conclusion through well-prepared materials and procedures the debate method successfully improved the argumentative writing ability of the students. Finally it was suggested for English language teachers apply the debate method for their classes. It was also recommended that students be active in utilizing the debate for their writing inside/outside the class. As debate was an instructional communicative teaching and learning approach thus the future researchers might be able to apply the method in other language classes in order to optimize the students achievement.
