Abstract

Key Words PPP presentation stage scene setting simple present tense PPP which stands for Presentation-Practice-Production is a variation of Audio-lingual method. In PPP the teacher introduces a situation which contextualizes the language to be taught then presented. After that the teacher leads the students into a highly controlled practice of the language using individual choral or pair work drilling. In the production stage the students start to use the language spontaneously and occasionally in a free conversation or role play. This study is concerned with the presentation stage in PPP since it is the main part in which grammar function is presented implicitly through scene setting. Scene setting is a manipulative situation in which the target language form is used in real-communication that is created by the teacher. Hence the fitness of integrating the target language into scene setting is an important consideration. This phenomenon brings the researcher to conduct a study on the use of scene setting in PPP for presenting simple present in terms of describing daily routines. A basic interpretive study is employed. The subject of the study was a teacher who teaches Basic 1 level many times and she has been teaching in ILP for three years. The instrument used to collect the data was a video observation. The video tape of the presentation stage was then transcribed analyzed and reported descriptively. The findings showed that the teacher brought interviewing and reporting public figure s daily routine as the theme of scene setting. In presenting three grammar forms of simple present tense the teacher used three scenes setting. It is concluded that in presenting each grammar form it is needed one scene setting. Another finding is that applying scene setting in presenting grammar needs creative teachers due to the complexity of fitting the situation into when and how the target language forms are used. Besides the choice and the criteria of pictures in supporting the scene setting need to be considered. Those findings bring the challenges for teachers in creating scene setting. The benefits of scene setting are providing the students to learn the language through a situation and enabling the teacher to elicit the target language forms while supporting students to obtain the context. Based on findings discussions and conclusions ILP teacher and the other English teachers are recommended to use the scene setting ideas that the researcher found in this study modified and explored it further. Future researchers are recommended to study the scene setting in the same level but with different topics. It is recommended to conduct an in-depth study on the use of scene setting in all language functions in the same level and then describes the implementation for each language function.
