Abstract

Key words English vocabulary techniques of teaching vocabulary The teaching of English vocabulary to young learners is considered very important. It requires appropriate techniques which are suitable with the learning style of the children. To teach vocabulary to children need effective strategies from the teacher in order to attract the children s attention and to help them learn. Thus this study is expected to find out the techniques of English teaching vocabulary which are used by the teacher and also to see how the teaching and learning activities are performed. This is a descriptive research that used an English teacher of SDN Sumbersari III Malang as the subject of the study. The instruments used for the research are observation checklist field notes and interview guide for the teacher. The result of the study shows that the techniques of teaching English vocabulary for the 4th graders used by the teacher are content techniques. The techniques included (1) the teaching English vocabulary through mother tongue (differential procedure) (2) the teaching English vocabulary based on ostensive procedure and (3) the teaching English vocabulary based on contextual procedure. There are also some other techniques used i.e. (a) give definition (b) give synonym and antonym (c) use pictures/flashcard and realia (d) do some demonstration/gestures (e) introduce words through context (f) listen and repeat technique and (g) use class aids. In selecting the materials for the teaching the teacher had some considerations they are the objective of the teaching English the students need interest and preference and the availability of the materials. The teacher also prepared some visual media such as flash cards and pictures. The flash cards or pictures which were chosen based on the topic of the teaching. There are some suggestions offered i.e. for the English teacher of SDN Sumbersari III Malang the teacher should have some strict rules in order to create a good condition for learning since the students are very active in terms of curiosity. The teacher is also suggested to combine all the techniques of teaching vocabulary which are considerably appropriate. This is meant to cope with the boredom of the students. For the other English teacher in Indonesia in case the students are very active the teacher should be well-prepared with knowledge about anything related to the topic of the teaching. At last for the future researchers since this study only covers the techniques of teaching vocabulary for the 4th graders they can analyze the techniques of teaching vocabulary for other grades or schools. Thus they can find out the difference between the techniques used for the teaching vocabulary for the 4th graders and the teaching of vocabulary for other grades or schools.
