Abstract

Key words ESL class materials and media teachers problems This research aims at describing the students and teachers perception about the implementation of English as a Second Language (ESL) class specifically in terms of the use of materials and media and the problems faced by the teachers. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. This research was conducted at SMAN 3 Malang. The subjects of the research were the students of five different ESL classes of grade X and XI as well as five teachers of each ESL class. The data were collected through the distribution on questionnaires for the students and interview with the teachers. The data comprised the students opinion about the materials and media the teachers opinion about the use of materials and media and the problems faced by the teachers in teaching ESL class as well as the solutions they have. The objective of ESL class was to prepare the students in taking the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for English as a Second Language. From this study it was found that the materials used in ESL class met the needs of the students both according to the students and the teachers. The materials have sufficiently supported the students preparation for CIE of English as a Second Language. Regarding the media both the students and teachers agreed that media have been rarely used in ESL class. Concerning the problems the teachers listed three of them the students lack in motivation unfamiliar vocabulary in the course book and the school s improper facilities. To overcome the problems the teachers have already some solutions such as inserting fun activities conducting pre-reading activities bringing own laptops and other media and making a plan B . Based on the result of this research it can be concluded that the materials used in ESL class met the objective of the program which is to prepare the students in order to be successful in the Cambridge exam. Related to the media the teachers have rarely involved media in teaching ESL class due to several reasons (1) the teaching of English in ESL class did not require the aid of media and (2) the media in the school were not always available to use. Relating to the conditions mentioned above it is suggested that the teachers enrich the materials by involving more authentic materials such as from the newspaper magazines etc. The teachers should also involve the use of media in teaching ESL class to help them deliver the materials attract the students attention and eliminate the students boredom. Related to the problems faced by the teachers it is suggested that the teachers find ways to increase students motivation and familiarize new vocabulary to the students. It is also expected that the school make some improvement for better facilities in order to fulfill the criteria of becoming an International-Standardized School (SBI).
