Kesalahan yang dilakukansiswadapatdijadikansumberinformasibelajardanpemahamanbagisiswaitusendiri.Penelitianinibertujuanuntuk mendeskripsikan proses berpikir siswa kelas VIII SMP dalammenyelesaikansoalmatematika TIMSSberdasarkanteori proses berpikir Swartz (1998) yang akan dijelaskan pada setiap langkah pemecahan masalah Polya. Pendekatan yang digunakanpadapenelitianiniadalahpenelitiankualitatif danmetodepenelitian yang digunakanadalahstudikasus.Subyekdalampenelitianiniadalahdua orang siswakelas VIII-E di SMP Negeri 4 Malang dengankriteria pertama seorangsiswapandai yang memperolehnilairapormatematikatertinggikedua di kelasnyatetapisiswatersebutbanyakmelakukankesalahansaatmenyelesaikansoaltes yang diberikandankedua seorangsiswa yang mengerjakansoaltesdengancaraberbedaatauunikdarisiswalainnya. Metodepengumpulan data yang digunakanadalahmetodetesdanwawancara. Keyword thinking process TIMSS Polya s problem solving Swartz s thinking process The achievement of learning achieved by Indonesian students has not shown that they can solve mathematics problems well. This can be seen in the achievement of Indonesian students in following TIMSS which is ranked 52 of 56 countries in 2011. In the learning activities especially in problem solving students do the thinking process. Student s thinking process is important to know because teachers can track the location and type of mistakes made by students. Student s mistakes can be a source of learning information and understanding for themselves. This study aims to describe the thinking process of grade VIII SMP students in solving the TIMSS mathematics problem based on the Swartz s thinking process (1998) that will be explained at every step of Polya s problem solving. The approach used in this research is qualitative researchand research method used is case study. The subjects in this study are two students of class VIII-E in SMP Negeri 4 Malang with criteria the first a clever student who received the second highest grade of mathematics report in the class but the student made many mistakes when completing the test and the second a student who working on test in different or unique ways from other students. Data collection methods used were test and interview methods. The results showed that both the subject of research in solving the TIMSS mathematics problem through the step of generating ideas clarifying ideas assessing the reasonableness of ideas and thinking complex on every step of Polya s problem solving. But at the look back step student in the first category do not clarify the idea on the solution of the problem.
