Abstract

Key words picture cards improve writing descriptive texts Writing as an important language skill is not only to be learned but also important to be taught. English language learners success in acquiring the ability to write depends on some extent how teachers are able to teach writing to their students. Students ability in writing can be improved through teacher s role in the classroom. This study is intended to describe the use of picture cards to help the students of VIII C in MTsN Jambewangi-Blitar to improve their ability in writing descriptive texts. The strategy is used as there were 92.5% of 40 students (37 students) scored below the minimum learning standard (SKBM) of 67 in preliminary study. The purpose of applying picture cards is to help the students to be able to generate and organize ideas of writing a paragraph of descriptive texts to make the effective and efficient process of sudents writing and to enrich students vocabulary when they do writing activities. The study was designed as Collaborative Classroom Action Research. It was done collaboratively with one of the English teachers. The subjects of the study were 40 students of VIII C in MTsN Jambewangi-Blitar in 2010/2011 academic year. The study consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings which took three weeks for all cycles. In the planning stage the researcher designed lesson plans research instruments and the criteria of success. In implementing the action the researcher conducted the research based on the lesson plan. In observing the action the researcher collected the data through some instruments concerning picture cards implementation such as scoring rubric observation checklist field notes and questionnaires. In reflecting the action the researcher achieved the criteria of success or not. During the implementation of the action the researcher had picture cards media in teaching writing to the students. In cycle 1 the researcher used mind mapping and game activities. First of all they did mind mapping by making some clues of picture cards. Afterwards other students guessed the clues in the form of game and then did writing activity from the clues. In cycle 2 the researcher used parallel writing through picture cards. The students changed the information from picture cards into writing. The criteria of success were 70% of the students (28 students) got score above SKBM and 75% of the students (30 students) were interested toward the strategy used. In cycle 1 the result of writing score showed that 60% of the students (24 students) got score above SKBM. Then there were 95% of the students (38 students) who were interested toward the strategy used. Therefore the researcher revised the plan and made different strategy. In cycle 2 there was a significant improvement. The result of writing score showed that 80% of the students (32 students) got score above SKBM. Then there were 85% of the students (34 students) were interested by strategy used. It can be concluded that the researcher has achieved all his criteria of success. Based on the research findings the researcher recommends the English teachers to use picture cards media as an alternative strategy in improving students ability in writing descriptive texts especially when the students get difficulties in generating and organizing ideas. Future researchers are suggested to conduct further studies in a longer period of time and in a different level of education not only in junior high schools level but also in elementary schools and senior high schools level.
