Abstract

Keywords Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition minimize heterogeneity reading achievement Some studies about the use of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) to improve the students achievement have been done several times. However the uses of CIRC that focus on minimizing the heterogeneity of students achievement are rarely done. Actually the heterogeneity of students achievement in a class is considered as a problem faced by teacher in class. It means that the students do not reach the same level in understanding the material given. This study was focused on the use of CIRC to minimize the heterogeneity of students reading achievement. The study was done using Classroom Action Research (CAR). Subjects of the study were the eighth graders of SMP Negeri Malang year 2010/2011 that was class 8G. Data of this study were collected using observation sheets interview field notes and reading test. This study was expected to give significance to other language teachers especially English teachers who faced the same problem in their class. It was also aimed to encourage teachers to be more innovative and creative in choosing and using teaching strategy to deliver their material. The result of this study revealed that the procedure of the use of CIRC to minimize the heterogeneity of students reading achievement consisted of three steps. They were pre-reading activity main reading activity and post reading activity. Each step has its own activity. In pre-reading activity there were (1) building knowledge and vocabulary and (2) making predictions. In main reading activity there was (1) treasure hunt comprehension of the story. Then in post-reading activity there were (1) story mapping and (2) story retell. This study proved that CIRC can be used to minimize the heterogeneity of students reading achievement. It was proved by the length of the gap between the highest and lowest scores achieved by the students. In preliminary test the gap was 58 in Post-test 1 the gap was shortened into 40 while in Post-test 2 the gap was shortened into 35. Besides minimizing the heterogeneity of the students achievement CIRC can also be used to improve students reading achievement. It was proved by the improvement of the highest score from 92 to 100 and the lowest score from 34 to 65after the implementation of CIRC. The number of students who could not pass the passing grade also decreased. Before the implementation of CIRC 21 students did not pass the passing grade while after the implementation only 7 students did not pass the passing grade.
