Abstract

Key words speaking performance grade XI language program fluency pronunciation grammar vocabulary content. This study was conducted to describe the speaking performance of grade XI language program students of SMAN 1 Lawang in self-introduction describing a picture and question and answer activities in terms of fluency pronunciation grammar vocabulary and content. The subject was 10 students of language program from grade XI. This study used a descriptive design. There were three instruments used in this study those were speaking tasks a scoring rubric and an audio recorder. The speaking tasks consisted of three activities namely self-introduction describing a picture and question and answer. The findings of this study were as follows. First the speaking performance of grade XI language program students in self-introduction in terms of fluency was very good (22points) in terms of pronunciation was very good (13 points) in terms of grammar was very good (13 points) in terms of vocabulary was very good (12 points) and in terms of content was very good (26 points). Second the speaking performance of grade XI language program students in describing a picture in terms of fluency was good (20 points) in terms of pronunciation was very good (12 points) in terms of grammar was good (11 points) in terms of vocabulary is very good (12 points) and in terms of content was good (25 points). Third the speaking performance of grade XI language program students in question and answer in terms of fluency was good (19 points) in terms of pronunciation was very good (12 points) in terms of grammar was good (11 points) in terms of vocabulary was good (11 points) and in terms of content was good (24 points). Based on the result of the study some recommendations are addressed to students and other researchers. For students they are advisable to improve their speaking ability. They should practice speaking in a more fluent way and minimize the hesitations that they usually make. They also need to enlarge their vocabulary size so that they can use various vocabularies in their speaking which will improve their confidence. For other researchers who want to study more about the speaking performance of senior high school students they can use the speaking tasks used by the researcher or use other speaking tasks such as storytelling speech debate etc with the intention that there will be more data collected to know how the speaking performance of senior high school students in general is. The result will be useful for the betterment of the students speaking performance.
