Abstract

Keywords writing a diary improve the ability in writing recount text Based on the preliminary study at SMAN 6 Malang the tenth grade students ability in writing recount was unsatisfying. Most of the students had problem with content organization vocabulary and grammar as well as lack of confidence in writing. As a result 65% out of 23 students did not like to write English compositions. Writing diary was proposed as an alternative strategy to solve the students problems in writing. Writing diary describes their daily activities and requires them to write on their private book telling about their lives. Besides training the students to write well this could benefit to a closer better relationship between the students and their teacher. This study was aimed at finding out how the implementation of a diary as a strategy to improve the ability of the tenth graders at SMAN 6 Malang in writing recount text. This study was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of two Cycles each consisted of three meetings. Each meeting consisted of three stages pre-activity whilst activity and post activity. In Cycle 1 the researcher used WH-questions to guide the students in writing their outlines of recount text. Cycle 2 was done by giving some varied topics. The researcher s colleague was appointed to observe the teaching and learning process as well as to observe the students attention and participation using checklists. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guides questionnaires observation checklist field notes and the students final writing product. The procedures in this study were as follows. First the researcher explained the principle of making outline based on WH-questions. Then a handout consisted of text and questions were distributed. After that the students had to answer the questions and identify the generic structure of recount text. Then step the students wrote recount text using WH-questions. Based on the findings it was found that writing diary effectively improved the students ability in writing recount text and obtained the student s positive responses. In this case 95.65% students reached good level in terms of content and 52.2% answered I like it related to the students interest in writing a composition. The result of the research also showed that diary as an additional activity successfully improves the students ability in writing recount text. The scores of the students writing products improved significantly from preliminary to Cycle 1 and from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. The students mean score improved from 63.8 in the preliminary study to 69.5 in Cycle 1 and 78.91 in Cycle 2. In conclusion writing diary can be implemented to improve the students ability in writing recount text of the tenth graders at SMAN 6 Malang. Writing diary was helpful to build the students positive responses and interest in learning English because they were accustomed to writing freely without any pressure.
