Abstract

Keywords representation power. There are many writers in Indonesia that use wayang character to represent their idea in their writing. Mangunwijaya is one of them who puts wayang to be one of his interests and expresses it in his idea of his novel. One of his novel that uses wayang character as his basic idea is Durga/Umayi. This novel gets huge appreciation from both Indonesian readers and international readers. Therefore this novel has two different versions the original Indonesian and the translated English. Mangunwijaya uses Durga and Umayi as the title of the novel to give oversees of the content of the novel. He wants to shows to the readers how paradox the main character of the novel is Iin Sulinda Pertiwi who has the same paradoxical character as Durga and Umayi who are both of them are actually the same person but having two contradictory sides between good and bad angel and evil and hero and villain. This study analyzes the paradoxical and the ambiguity condition happened to Iin from the eye of feminism. Iin is depicted into an ordinary woman who changes dramatically into extraordinary woman from an innocent laundry girl who is weak and really dominated by men into a high class prostitute who is really independent dominant aggressive and powerful. Those paradoxical conditions happened because of her willingness to have the same equality like her twin brother Brojol. In other words her act of being strong aggressive and masculine has been the effect of the discrimination she had when she was a child. Born to be a woman makes her treated as a woman who is supposed to be feminine that does feminine thing and she is also limited from the access to do whatever she wants while her twin brother is allowed to do whatever he wants. Meanwhile related to Mangunwijaya s choice of Durga and Umayi characters Durga is described as a very bad and ugly woman monster that only causes lots of destruction. Meanwhile Umayi is described as very beautiful soft calm and powerful. Both are really different yet they are the same person. Because of that this thesis is trying to find out what kind of person Iin actually is whether she is the strong woman performed by Durga or on the other hand she is the weak Umayi. The concept of paradoxical idea of both characters will be used to find the ambiguity ambivalence and paradoxical things in Iin s life both as a laundry girl or a high class prostitute. As the result it is found out that the text performs paradox very clearly through Iin character. The text builds a strong construction of woman but at the same time it builds a weak construction of woman. It can be seen from the way Iin acts acts as a strong woman like Durga yet she still performs weaknesses as Umayi does. That is why the concept of strong woman weak man is the appropriate idea to describe Iin s paradoxes.
