Abstract

Keywords semantic adjustment English translation translation strategies There are several studies devoted to studying the English translation of Indonesian texts but only Hariyanto (2009) analyzed novel translation. Due to this fact the researcher believes that the study on novel translation especially from Indonesian into English is worth conducting because it will give significant contribution to the education of Indonesian students and translators. In addition it will encourage Indonesian literary works to get international recognition by translating them into English. The present study includes the chosen translation strategies i.e. omission and addition strategies which are employed in the first 8 chapters of Laskar Pelangi. The data are analyzed qualitatively. The data found are 70 items. They are omission (40) and addition (30). Then the data are classified based on unit of translation. Based on the analysis in the omission strategies the translator tends to omit the parts of the source text because they are unimportant and hard to understand. The translator also makes the right decision in translating metaphor. In the addition strategies the translator gives additional information which does not exist in the source text but it is necessary for the target readers. The additional information is also used to clarify and improve the vague idea of the source text. The aim of using the omission and addition strategies is to make semantic adjustment in the target text. The translator makes semantic adjustment in the translation in order to make the target text readers feel the same effect as the source text readers feel. The cultural elements of the source text are shifted to the cultural elements in the target text in order to make the target text readable and acceptable for the readership. Due to this occurrence it can be inferred that the method which is used is communicative translation method. However the weakness of using this method is the discrepancies between the message of the source text and the target text. Some suggestions are drawn for students translation lecturers translators and future researchers. For the students it is suggested that they are aware of the translation strategies and the semantic adjustment in translation so that they can apply them in practicing translation. For the lecturers it is advised that the lecturers are concerned to provide the students with culture-specific word translation test and encourage the students to study the translation strategies and semantic adjustment. For translator it is recommended that the translators develop their competence and performance in translating culture-specific words. Lastly since the research only covers omission and addition strategies the future researchers are expected to study the semantic adjustment in the rest of the translation strategies.
