Abstract

Keywords picture cards teaching vocabulary This study is aimed at examining whether there is a significant difference in the vocabulary mastery of students who are taught using picture cards as a medium in teaching and learning and those who are taught without using them. This study was conducted to the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Pakisaji of academic year 2010/2011. The population of the study was the seventh year students of SMP 1 Pakisaji in the academic year of 2010/2011. And the number of the population is approximately 186 students. The samples were two classes of the seventh grade one class was used as the experimental group and the other one was the control group. The samples were selected based on the same level of competence in English. Each class consisted of 31 students. So the total number was 62 students. The instrument used to get the data was the vocabulary test consisting of 20 test items in the form of multiple choice with four options. Each of the test items were considered valid from the view of test content and the representation of the materials tested since the test used content validity. The reliability was found to be 0.96 it meant that the reliability of the test was very high. This study was a quasi experimental design with the procedures including the pre-experimental stage the experimental stage and the post-experimental stage. The finding shows that the mean score of the pretest of the experimental group is 11.12 and 11.92 for the control group. And the experimental group got better mean score than the control group. The mean score of the posttest for the experimental group was 19.32 and 15.48 for the control group. Based on the Independent samples t test with the help of the SPSS 16.0 program it was found that the t value was -13.345 at 0.05 level of significance. It means that there is a significant difference in the vocabulary mastery of the students taught using picture cards and those taught without using picture cards. That sample test is a comparison between the mean scores of the posttest of the both groups. And for the mean score of the pretest and the mean score of the posttest from the control group the t value was -5.904. It means that there is significant difference between the pretest and the posttest of the control group. And for the experimental group it was found that the t value was -12.047. It means that there is significant difference between the pretest and the posttest of the experimental group. The findings showed that the different treatment used for the experimental group and the control group gave a significant different result in the students mastery of vocabulary. Therefore the Null hypothesis is rejected. In conclusion the finding of the research shows that picture cards are effective to be used in teaching and learning of vocabulary. Thus the researcher suggests that picture cards can be used in teaching and learning of vocabulary at the Junior High School.
