Abstract

Key words writing ability recount text picture series Writing skill is one of language skills that should be mastered by the students of Junior High School. One type of texts that 8th graders must be able to write is recount text. Based on the result of the students writing product in the preliminary study only 30.96% of the students could reach the score 3 and 4 in terms of content and 26.19% in terms of organization. Based on the problem above this research wanted to overcome the problem by using picture series in guiding the students in generating and organizing the ideas when they make a recount text. In addition the using of picture series strategy has never been used in teaching writing skill especially in teaching recount text. The research was conducted at SMPN 21 Malang Jalan Danau Tigi Malang. The subject of the research was class of 8.6 2010/2011 academic year which consisted of 42 students 22 females and 20 males. The research used collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology. The data comprised the students attitudes during the teaching and learning process and students writing scores. The data were collected through interview guides questionnaires observation checklists field notes and the students final writings. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of three meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The result of the first cycle was 71.43% of the students could reach score at least 3 in terms of content and 54.76% of the students could reach score at least 3 in terms of organization. It was much better than the score of the preliminary study. The students also showed the better attitude towards writing ability. They did not feel confused anymore to write a recount text and they did not get stuck in the middle of their writing. The motivation of the students also increased it was because the usage of picture could attract their attention. Continuing in the second cycle the researcher got a better result of their motivation and writing products. The last result showed that 83.33% of the students reached score at least 3 in terms of content and 88.10% of the student succeeded in getting score at least 3 in terms of organization. After conducting the second cycle the criteria of success which was at least 60% of the students could reach score at least 3 in terms of content and organization has been achieved. Overall 31 students felt that their ability in writing a recount text was much improved than before using picture series. Therefore the researcher stopped the action. Based on the result in this research it could be concluded that the implementation of picture series through writing process was succeeded to help the students in generating and organizing the ideas in writing a recount text. The English teachers are suggested to apply the picture series strategy in teaching writing skill in order to get the better improvement of the students writing products. For the Principals they should facilitate the English teacher in finding or making the picture series and also provide LCD in order to show the picture series. For the further researcher it is also suggested to explore the research by using picture series in different text types and level of educations in order to know whether or not the strategy works well in improving the students writing skill especially in organizing and generating the ideas.
