Abstract

Keywords Beyond Centers and Circle Time bilingual playgroup. The increasing of English mastery both in spoken and written forms supports Indonesian government to issue the decree on the requirement for the teaching of English from the primary school that is in the fourth grade. Many playgroups and kindergarten also offer English programs and claim to implement a bilingual program. The bilingual program involves the use of two languages during the teaching and learning activities. Beyond Centers and Circle Time (BCCT) is a teaching approach that is applied by a number of playgroups in Indonesia nowadays. It supports very young learners to learn through playing activities that are supported by the teacher in several centers such as sensory motor alphabetic nature socio-drama block art and creativity and technology centers. The knowledge is not transferred from the teacher but teacher is only the facilitator motivator and evaluator. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The instruments used were checklist interview recording field notes and documentation. This research studies the syllabus the teaching-learning activities the materials and the assessment at Bilingual Playgroup Dunia Anak Probolinggo. The subjects were the students and the teachers there. The observations were conducted on 9th February till 4th March 2011. The first finding was that the syllabus was created based on generic learning menu. Second the teaching-learning activities consisted of some activities which can be generally classified into pre-activities main activities and closing activities. These activities used BCCT focusing on several centers. The use of English as the medium of instruction occurs in 80% in teacher s instruction and 50% in students communication with the teachers. Third the materials were created by the teacher by considering the proximity with the students students interest and needs and the readiness of the teacher. The last is the assessment which is informal assessment that is on going emphasizing the process of students learning. According to the findings several suggestions were offered. For example the teachers should try to maximize the use of English as the classroom language the teachers should improve the quality in teaching very young learners especially in bilingual school and the teachers should not treat the students the same way because every student has their own characteristics in learning a particular thing. It is also expected that other researchers conduct the study on Beyond Centers and Circle Time (BCCT) focusing on other issues.
