Abstract

Keywords autonomous learning strategy reading comprehension narrative text narrative pyramid classroom action research. This study was aimed at improving the eighth graders reading comprehension using autonomous learning strategy at SMPN 1 Singosari Malang. Among the four language skills reading is considered as the most important skill to be mastered. Reading skill is believed to be useful to improve the students mastery of other skills and to support academic success. However in its reality the students reading ability is still far from the expectation. Many students have difficulties in understanding English texts. Based on the questionnaire distributed among 8E students of SMPN 1 Singosari in the preliminary study the students insufficient reading practice both inside and outside the classroom cause them to have low reading comprehension. In addition the teacher dominated most of the reading activities. As a result the students were passive and dependent on the teacher in the process of comprehension. Relevant to the background this study used classroom action research design that encompasses two cycle and four stages (planning implementing observing and reflecting). The classroom English teacher and an assistant acted as the observer during the teaching and learning process. The subjects were 32 students of 8E in SMP Negeri 1 Singosari Malang in 2010/2011 academic year. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guides questionnaires observation checklists field notes and the students final reading score. The finding showed that autonomous strategy successfully improved the students narrative comprehension. The students reading score improved significantly from preliminary study to Cycle 1 and from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. The students mean score improved from 73.06 in the preliminary study to 80.96 in Cycle 1 and reached 83.95 in Cycle 2. Furthermore the students attitude towards reading activities was good after the implementation of the study. Most of the students showed their active participation and good motivation during the implementation of the strategy. Regarding these findings it is suggested that English teachers implement autonomous learning strategy in teaching reading of narrative text type and other text types too. The English teachers were also recommended to give more interesting texts. In assisting the students to master reading skill it is strongly recommended that the school adds more various collections of English reading materials. In addition further researchers are suggested to apply this strategy for different text types on different grades and levels of education to see if the strategy can be used to help the students to improve their English ability well.
