Abstract

Keywords communicative courseboook coursebook evaluation Many kinds of coursebooks are available in the markets. Coursebook evaluation is very important due to the fact that there are many coursebook which are not appropriate to be used in the teaching and learning activities. Nowadays there are already electronic school books (Buku Sekolah Elektronik) provided by the government that can be accessed by downloading them from certain websites or buying the printed form. One of them is Interlanguage English for Senior High School Students XI for language study program. This courseboook was selected to be analyzed in this study because the introduction section of the book states that it was designed based on communicative approach. Based on that the researcher is interested in examining how communicative the coursebook is in terms of communicative components and of communicative activities. This study used descriptive method in picturing the content of the book and explaining the quality of the book in terms of communicative components and communicative activities. The object is the book Interlanguage English for Senior High School Students XI . The instrument used in this study was the communicative coursebook evaluation checklist which was developed by the researcher from five checklists proposed by McDonough and Shaw (1993 in White 2001) Cunningsworth (1995) Ansary and Babaii (2002) Litz (2005) and Jahangard (2007). The data were collected by identifying the content of the book with criteria on the communicative coursebook evaluation checklist. The researcher described which of the criteria are already met by the book. The result of the analysis in the form of the level of suitability will determine the quality of the book in terms of communicative components and communicative activities. The result showed that the level of suitability for communicative components criteria was 9.7 of the 0-10 score range. Based on that the quality of Interlanguage English for Senior High School Students XI in terms of communicative components is excellent. Meanwhile the level of suitability for communicative activities criteria is 8.6 of the 0-10 score range which indicates the quality of Interlanguage English for Senior High School Students XI in terms of communicative activities is excellent. In short this coursebook is an excellent communicative coursebook.
