Abstract

Keywords educational drama role-play speaking skill English as a language for international communication has made the teaching of English increasingly considered important in Indonesia. The importance of English in this country can be seen through the government policy that made English to be taught in elementary school junior high school senior high school and university. Referring to the facts above it can be concluded that Indonesian students are expected to master English by the time they graduate from secondary school or from undergraduate programs. However the fact shows a contradictory result. Many Indonesian students cannot communicate in English well after 6 to 12 years of learning English in their schools because of some reasons such as curriculum changes teachers qualifications and welfare classroom size cultuture barrier and students motivation. Related to the problem above this study is intended to find out how to improve students speaking skill in a tertiary level by using a Classroom Action Research method. Especially the present study aims to know how educational drama and role playing techniques can improve Fashion Education department of State University of Malang students English speaking skill. To begin the study the researcher applied preliminary study to know the students ability in speaking. The preliminary was conducted by using questionnaire doing observation and oral speaking test. The main data collection in the present study was based on the oral speaking test result in preliminary study Cycle 1 and Cycle 2. From the data analysis it was found that there was only 10 % out of 50 students who met the criterion of success. In Cycle 1 the percentage was improved. There was 42% of the students who met the criterion of success. It was a good thing that an improvement happened in Cycle 1 but still it hasn t reached the predetermined criterion of 75%. Because of that failure then the cycle was continued to Cycle 2. In Cycle 2 better improvements occured on the students progress. There was 82 % of them succeed to meet the criterion of success. Thus the cycle was stopped in Cycle 2. Based on the research it can be concluded that using educational drama and role-playing techniques can be used to improve students English speaking skill. In addition it also improved the students speaking sub-skills in terms of (1) comprehension (2) structure (3) vocabulary (4) pronunciation and (5) fluency.
