Abstract

Key Words reading ability SMP. This research investigates the reading ability of the 8th graders of SMPN 10 Malang. The sample of this research consists of three out of the nine classes of the 8th year of SMPN 10 Malang including high medium and low achiever classes. Each of the classes consists of 39 students. The high and medium achiever classes were accessible since there is only one class belonging to high and medium achievers. The low achiever class was chosen by using random sampling because there were more than one class of low achievers. The 8th year was the only accessible level for being used as the sample of this research because the 9th year was being prepared for facing the national final examination and the 7th year was being used by another researcher. In accordance with the nature of the objective of this study the appropriate design was descriptive research. This research was conducted in SMPN 10 Malang. This research used four kinds of instruments they were students average score which is the average of several lessons mark test score interview and observation. Those instruments were used to support the data. The research result showed that the students score in the ability of reading narrative text is better than recount text since the narrative text is easier than recount text. Based on the mean calculated high achiever class has the best accumulation score which impacts to the mean gained for each test. However the mean of medium achiever class is worse than the mean of the low achiever class. In terms of reaching the goal of macro and micro skills of reading which is stated in the 8th year curriculum it is suggested for the EFL teacher to be more creative in considering the techniques in teaching reading skill since reading is more emphasized than other skills. For future researchers it is better to conduct a placement test to consider which belongs to high medium and low achievers. Then in testing reading ability it would be better if the researcher use several kinds of texts in which the readability score are varied enough. It is better for future researchers to give various forms of questions to examine the students proficiency.
